Chapter 85 · A reading companion

    The Fountain

The narrator examines whale respiration and the unresolved question of whether the spout consists of water or vapor. His anatomical discussion develops into a meditation on thought, doubt, and the flashes of divine intuition that can accompany uncertainty.

    Analysis

Chapter 85 makes the whale’s ordinary breathing an occasion for examining the limits of human knowledge. Rather than advancing an immediate sequence of action, it develops the encounter between observer and animal through anatomy, hunting practice, and speculation. Its opening juxtaposes immense stretches of time with an absurdly exact present moment, emphasizing that centuries of proximity have not settled whether the spout is water or vapor. Practical knowledge nevertheless matters: the whale’s need to replenish its breath exposes it to pursuit. The address “O hunter” qualifies human mastery, attributing success less to skill than to “the great necessities” of animal life. The chapter thus makes vulnerability and mystery coexist within the whale’s immense physical power.

The narrative proceeds like an informal scientific lecture repeatedly interrupted by jokes, objections, and imaginative comparisons. Anatomical explanation becomes accessible through “vermicelli-like vessels,” the camel’s provisions, canal locks, and a city gas-pipe. These analogies translate unfamiliar structures into familiar objects, while also revealing how explanation depends on resemblance. The narrator distinguishes observation from inference, yet his confidence fluctuates between “indisputable” anatomy and what merely “seems” persuasive. An imagined challenger demands, “Speak out!” and receives the answer that apparently simple questions are often the hardest. This staged exchange turns exposition into argument, inviting readers to experience uncertainty rather than simply receive information. Meanwhile, jokes about perfume and the world’s listening habits keep the lecture conversational and satirical.

The spout becomes an especially pointed image of knowledge that cannot safely be possessed. Its center is concealed by mist, surrounding spray confuses observation, and closer investigation threatens bodily injury. “You cannot go with your pitcher to this fountain” transforms the chapter’s title: this fountain cannot be sampled and carried away as uncomplicated evidence. Yet the narrator does not abandon interpretation. His hypothesis that the spout is mist rests partly on the whale’s “dignity and sublimity,” openly mixing aesthetic preference with reasoning. The comparison between vapor and profound thought elevates the animal, but the narrator’s own steaming head, explained through hot tea and August heat, comically unsettles his claim to philosophical authority.

The conclusion turns unresolved physical inquiry into a statement about spiritual understanding without eliminating uncertainty. The whale’s vapor becomes a canopy of “incommunicable contemplations,” suggesting an inward life the observer can imagine but cannot directly access. The rainbow then supplies an image in which obscurity enables illumination: it appears in vapor rather than clear air. Likewise, the narrator’s “dim doubts” occasionally receive flashes of intuition. His gratitude does not establish a definitive religious position; instead, he describes a standpoint that makes “neither believer nor infidel.” The chapter’s movement from disputed respiration to this balanced declaration suggests that incomplete knowledge need not end in either dogmatic certainty or simple denial. Wonder survives because the mist remains.

    Key events

    1. 01The narrator poses the water-versus-vapor question.
    2. 02He explains the whale’s lungs, surfacing, and breathing through the spiracle.
    3. 03He connects vapor above the whale with contemplation and his own uncertain beliefs.

    Themes

    1. 01Limits of observation: Centuries of close watching have not settled the nature of the spout.
    2. 02Doubt and intuition: The narrator allows spiritual insight and earthly uncertainty to coexist.

    Symbols & imagery

    1. 01Rainbow in vapor: Light appearing within mist represents divine intuition arising amid doubt.
    2. 02Spouting canal as gas-pipe: A familiar mechanism frames the anatomical question without resolving it.
